RMT is not a quick course. It's a regulated health profession requiring systematic study of anatomy, physiology and clinical technique. Set expectations first, then choose a school.
How long the program takes
According to Canada's Government Job Bank, massage therapy training in Ontario is typically 18 to 24 months, with some programs running 18 to 36 months, plus a period of supervised practice.
Counting exams and registration after graduation, most people take about 2 to 3 years from enrolment to full registration. The exact timeline depends on full-time vs. part-time study and your own exam progress.
Total hours and delivery
Accredited programs typically involve over 2,000 hours of instruction, split into several types:
- Theory: anatomy, physiology, pathology, treatment principles;
- Labs / hands-on practice: repeated practice of assessment and treatment under guidance;
- Clinical placement: supervised work with real clients to build practical experience.

Main subjects you'll study
Curricula vary, but the core is broadly consistent and usually includes:
- anatomy and physiology (how the body is built and works);
- pathology (common conditions and contraindications);
- assessment skills (identifying a client's issue);

- clinical practice and client communication.
Why you must choose an accredited program
This is the single most important thing when choosing a school: only graduates of an accredited program are eligible to apply for CMTO registration. If you complete a program that isn't recognized, you may be unable to enter the registration process no matter how well you did.
Questions to ask a school before enrolling
When you contact a school, ask at least these:
- Is this an accredited program eligible for CMTO registration?
- What's the total length, total hours, and delivery (online/in-person)?
- What do fees include and exclude (exam fees are often separate)?
- Is exam prep provided (e.g. MCQ and OSCE practice)?
- What are the historical exam pass rates?
