Becoming an RMT isn't "finish school and you're done". It's a defined path: accredited training → exams → registration application. Here's the outline.
Step 1 · Complete an accredited program
First, complete an accredited massage therapy program (see the training page). Only graduates of accredited programs are eligible for the next steps. This is why choosing the right school comes first.
Step 2 · Pass the certification exams
After graduating, you take CMTO's certification exams, generally in two parts:
- Multiple-choice exam (MCQ): tests theory and knowledge;
- OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination): tests hands-on clinical skills through simulated scenarios.
Exams are delivered through an official testing provider. Formats and scheduling are per CMTO's official information.
Step 3 · Complete the jurisprudence module
Beyond skills and knowledge, you must complete an online jurisprudence module covering the laws, regulations and professional ethics relevant to practising in Ontario — ensuring you understand your professional responsibilities.
Step 4 · Apply to CMTO for registration
Once you've passed the exams and completed the requirements, you submit a registration application to CMTO. After it's approved, you officially become a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) and may lawfully practise and use the title in Ontario.
